Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li by movie director Andrzej Bartkowiak starring Kristin Kreuk

Street Fighter movie posterMost movies that are based off of video games don’t do well. I wanted to give Street Fighter a chance because Chun-Li was always my pick when playing the stand-alone game when I was a kid.

Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li is a story of a privileged child who has her father taken from her and her mother pass away. Later in life she receives this ancient scroll that puts her on a quest for justice. At first it’s for her own anger and personal justice but Chun Li soon learns that the real injustice is what is going on in the city around her.

Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li is from the same movie director that did entertaining action movies and martial art movies like Doom, Exit Wound, and Romeo must die. Director Andrzej Bartkowiak also worked as the cinematographer for movies like Lethal Weapon 4, U.S. Marshalls, and The Devil’s Advocate.

I was expecting landscape scenes and fighting scenes in Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li that would take a persons breath away but I was sadly disappointed by close range shots and one great martial art scene.

Rottentomatoes.com gave the Street Fighter cast less than one star. Why? Simply because the Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li cast was flimsy at best and they complained of a shallow plot.

I have to agree with Rottentomatoes.com comments. I really think they could have gone deeper into the movie storyline. Here I am again complaining about background stories. I would have liked to know a little more about Chun Li’s dad and about Gen.

What about the Street Fighter cast members? Kristin Kreuk was definitely not the person that I expected to play Chun Li. They could have honestly gotten someone who looked less like a babe from California and someone who looked like they grew up in the orient.

What happened to the Kristin Kreuk that everyone loved from Smallville? It just seemed that through the whole movie Kristin Kreuk had put more effort into her martial arts and less into her movie lines. Ultimately they ended up looking robotic.

Kristin Kreuk brought us the best Chun Li that she could do but I wish they had brought in more characters from the Street Fighter game. Director Andrzej Bartkowiak did his best to bring fans Vega but it just didn’t seem enough.

All in all if you’re looking for a movie to entertain you for a couple hours then Street Fighter Legend of Chun Li will do the trick. Just go into watching the movie expecting not a lot to correlate with the actual epic game that its based off of.
