“When asked what Swan was doing in Central Park pond at 3 a.m., Swan replied the backstroke.”
Movie Genre: Comedy
Movie Plot: ($3)
Benjy Stone is the junior writer on the largest variety/comedy show on television in the mid 1950’s. The comedy show invites Alan Swann, a well-loved movie star to be on the show. When Kaiser, the headliner of the show wants to throw the Erol Flynn type actor off the show, Benjy promises to baby-sit his childhood hero until airtime.
Richard Benjamin directed the movie and I have to admit that I need to look at more of his work.
The whole scene between Boss Rojack and Kaiser is hilarious. I love mirror scenes where one person copies the other.
Peter O’Toole must have just wanted to do a fun movie in 1982. Most of Peter O’Tooles characters were about drama and romance. I hope to find additional roles like this. Peter O’Toole plays the perfect drunken movie star as Allen Swann.
As for Mark Linn Baker, the only time I remember him is through his role on television. On Perfect Strangers, the show was full of comedy. His serious role as Benjy Stone with a little comedy added in for fun was a nice change of pace.
Movie Ending:
I really didn’t agree with the movie ending. I think that Benjy Stones speech about his childhood hero was just over the top and could have been done a different way. It just seemed too dramatic for a comedy movie.
If you were looking for a fun movie to rent with some classic movie and television stars then I’d grab My Favorite Year. The comedy is not forced like current movies today and I think you would really like Peter O’Tooles character Allen Swann.

A 40-year-old movie distribution company closes its doors this week due to the economy. New Yorker Films will no longer be distributing foreign films to the U.S. On Monday New Yorker Films made a statement announcing its closure and thanking everyone involved for their loyalty throughout the years.
The closure of New York Films is sad news. I wonder if the closure is a signal to those in the movie industry? A signal that the U.S. will be tighter with their money than before and that remakes of older movie storylines will just not work. I mean if some as original as a foreign movie distributor closes its door, then will mainstream Hollywood be next?
I think Screen Rant says it best when discussing why the movie industry is doing so bad. The movie companies are owned by parent companies like News Corp. and GE. When these parent companies struggle then the movie companies like 20th Century Fox and NBC Universal struggle.
Foreign movies are not gone forever in the United States. Zeitgeist Films and Regent Releasing are still emerging. Regent Releasing, the Los Angeles based distributor just recently distributed Amuse Soft Entertainment Oscar winner “Departures”
