International Human Rights Day
I feel really bad because yesterday was International Human Rights Day of recognition. Back in 1950 the day was set aside by the United Nations General Assembly.
”Today, poverty prevails as the gravest human rights challenge in the world. Combating poverty, deprivation and exclusion is not a matter of charity, and it does not depend on how rich a country is.”
“By tackling poverty as a matter of human rights obligation, the world will have a better chance of abolishing this scourge in our lifetime….Poverty eradication is an achievable goal. “ – Louise Arbor
The sad thing is that the basic needs of human beings are still being neglected today. In some countries a daughter has less value than a son. Some countries are in such poverty that children are not given the chance to go to school.
Around the world people face prejudice and at times death for their religious beliefs.
The battle of enforcing basic rights is not over and there are many celebrities that dedicate their time and life to this cause.
Angelina Jolie
Not only is Angelina Jolie the Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR but also she’s been known to cover all her cost when traveling overseas and working with the UNHCR staff.
To help those in Haiti, Celebrities Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, and Wyclef Jean worked on the Clean Streets project for the Yele Haiti Foundation.
Celebrities Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have donated over $8 million to different organizations around the world.
Bono
A charity bug bit Bono in 1979. His inspiration came from seeing The Secret Policeman’s Ball where The Police had performed.
Bono was inspired to get involved in charity work after seeing The Secret Policeman’s Ball in 1979.
Through the years Bono has worked with many organizations that work with people with AIDS, At Risk Youths, Children, Orphans, Disaster Relief and Women.
If you would like to get involved there are several organizations that deal with basic human rights. Check out the following charities:
